Etymology edit

From Proto-Indo-European *leyd-sk-tos, from Proto-Indo-European *leyd- (to allow, let, release). Cognate with Proto-Slavic *listъ (leaf), Latvian laiska (leaf of a flax stalk), laiksne (white water-lily), and Old Prussian lāiskas (book). See also léisti (to let, allow).[1]
