From Dutch patriarch, from Late Latin patriarcha, from Byzantine Greek πατριάρχης (patriárkhēs, “the founder of the tribe/family”), from Ancient Greek πατριά (patriá, “generation, ancestry, descent, tribe, family”) + -αρχης (-arkhēs, “-arch”). Doublet of batrik.
