From Dutch patriarch, from Late Latin patriarcha, from Byzantine Greek πατριάρχης (patriárkhēs, the founder of the tribe/family), from Ancient Greek πατριά (patriá, generation, ancestry, descent, tribe, family) + -αρχης (-arkhēs, -arch). Doublet of batrik.
