From Malay pola, from Old Javanese pola (“design”), polah (“conduct, behaviour, doings, undertaking”) (cf. pa- + ulah, hence equivalent to peng- + olah/ulah), olah/ulah (“action, activity”). Doublet of polah. Compare to Indonesian olah (“method, process”), ulah (“behavior, manners, ways”).
