From Middle High German scheln, schelen, from Old High German skelen, skellen, from the noun scala, from Proto-Germanic *skalō, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kelH- (to cut, divide) or *(s)kel- (to cover). Cognate with Bavarian schäin, schöln, schön, and Yiddish שיילן (sheyln).
