From Old English sċyldiġ (guilty, sinful, criminal), from Proto-Germanic *skuldīgaz, equivalent to shild +‎ -y. Cognate with West Frisian skildich (guilty), Dutch schuldig (guilty), German schuldig (guilty), Swedish skyldig (guilty).
