Borrowed from Old East Slavic хвостъ (xvostŭ). Related to Ingrian vasta, Karelian vašta, Ludian vast and Veps vast. Alternatively a Germanic borrowing; compare Swedish kvast.

From Old East Slavic хвостъ (xvostŭ, “tail”), from Proto-Slavic *xvostъ. Cognates include Finnish vasta and Veps vast.
Alternatively, borrowed from a Germanic language, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *kwastuz (“tassel”). Compare Swedish kvast.
