From Proto-West Germanic *wallan, from Proto-Germanic *wallaną, whence also Gothic 𐍅𐌿𐌻𐌰𐌽 (wulan, well up, boil over), Old High German wallan (German wallen), Old Norse vella (to wall over, boil) (Danish vælde).
