Etymology

From ārstnieks (doctor, physician) +‎ -ība (with ārstnieks from ārsts (doctor, physician) +‎ -nieks), with k > c via palatalization. The term ārstnieks is attested in only older sources; in the modern language, it has been replaced by ārsts.[1]
