Non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese 帶 (“belt; zone”, SV: đái), probably partially to avoid the homophonous đái (“to piss”). Compare giới (dated/rare reading giái) and dái (“testicles”), Phần Lan (“Finland”) and phân (“faeces”).
