Etymology

From a Proto-Indo-European root *ḱēy(w)-, *ḱyē(w)- (grey, dark), with a Baltic extension *-m-. Compare Latvian sirms (gray).
The closest cognate is Proto-Slavic *śěrъ, further cognates are Old Irish cīar (dark), Proto-Germanic *hairaz (grey), and Albanian surmë.
