Inherited from Byzantine Greek γαϊτάνιν (gaïtánin). Compare Ottoman Turkish غیطان (gaytan), Arabic قِيطَان (qīṭān), linkable to قُطْن (quṭn, cotton), and Medieval Latin gaitanum
