Literary loan translation from Romance (French volcan (fr) m, Italian vulcano (it) m), from ancient Greek ἡφαίστειον (neuter form of ἡφαίστειος (hēphaísteios) “belonging to Hephaestus”), scil. ὄρος (óros) “mountain” or such.[1]
