Etymology edit

Traditionally derived from λέπας (lépas, scaur, rock) +‎ -ᾰ́ς (-ás), as the animal clings to the rock. Alternatively, it could derive from λέπος (lépos, rind, husk), λεπίς (lepís, scale, flake).
