λῶμα
Ancient Greek edit
Etymology edit
Maybe from Proto-Indo-European *h₂welh₁- (“hair, wool”), like Latin vellus (“fleece”), or from the same root of Ancient Greek εὔληρα (eúlēra, “rein”), Latin lōrum (“thong”) and Old Armenian լար (lar, “rope”). Beekes finds both these proposals unconvincing.
Pronunciation edit
- (5th BCE Attic) IPA(key): /lɔ̂ː.ma/
- (1st CE Egyptian) IPA(key): /ˈlo.ma/
