Formation like θαλερός (thalerós) and φανερός (phanerós). There is no etymology, because of the uncertain meaning. Traditionally taken to be related to μάλα (mála, very, exceedingly); however, according to Bechtel it belongs to μάλευρον (máleuron, wheat-meal) and μύλη (múlē, mill, hand-mill).
