A foreign borrowing. Has been compared with Hittite [script needed] (šulii̯a-, lead). Possibly a term of Gypsy-like street tricksters, see σαλός (salós, fool) starting to appear with Christians as a synonym of μωρός (mōrós) from the 4th century CE and Arabic سَالُوس (sālūs, blandishment) only found from such slang.
