Learned borrowing from English terpene or French terpène or German Terpen, the latter coined by Kekulé in analogy to German Terpentine (“turpentine”), from Latin terebinthina (“turpentine”), from Ancient Greek τερέβινθος (terébinthos, “terebinth”).
