Russian edit

Etymology edit

Perhaps derived from the past tense of быва́ть (byvátʹ, to take place, to happen, to be (regularly)).

Pronunciation edit

Adjective edit

быва́лый (byvályj)

  1. (colloquial) worldly-wise, experienced
    быва́лый солда́тbyvályj soldátveteran
  2. (colloquial) habitual, familiar
э́то де́ло быва́лоеéto délo byválojethis is nothing new

Usage notes edit

Short forms *быва́л, *быва́ла, *быва́ло, *быва́лы theoretically exist, but are usually avoided due to their similarity to past-tense forms (compare быва́л (byvál, it took place, it happened, he was (regularly)), feminine быва́ла (byvála)).
