Etymology

Inherited from English wanted, past tense of want. Attested in writing as вантетъ (vantet), instead of the expected one with the ending -едъ (-ed). The origin of this final-obstruent devoicing can be explained by the common sound shift rules used in Russian. Compare both written forms гудъ (gud) and гутъ (gut, “good”).
