Etymology 1 edit

From Proto-Slavic *vьrdlo, an instrumental noun of вря (vrja, to spring, to boil) +‎ -ло (-lo, instrumental suffix). Probably originally meaning pole, beam as in Ukrainian верло́ (verló, pole, bat), dialectal ви́рло (výrlo) or the derivative Bulgarian върли́на (vǎrlína, long rod) (cognate with dialectal Czech vrdlina/vrlina (beam) /Moravian dialects/).
