From Old East Slavic горньчаръ (gornĭčarŭ), from гърньчаръ (gŭrnĭčarŭ), from гърньць (gŭrnĭcĭ, pot), /r/ preserved in горня́ (hornjá). Compare черне́ць (černécʹ) (nominative) - ченця́ (čencjá) (genitive, from earlier *чернця́). Cognate with Bulgarian грънча́р (grǎnčár).
