Etymology edit

Fossilized locative singular of Proto-Slavic *dolъ (valley) (u-stem in Old Church Slavonic and Bulgarian). Compare го́ре (góre, up), originally "to/on the mountain", and note the semantic parallels with English down, originally "from the hill" (compare dialectal English down (hill) and English dune, derived from the same Germanic word).
