Inherited from Proto-Slavic *dyxъ, deverbal from *dyxati (compare Russian ды́хать (dýxatʹ)). Cognate with literary Bulgarian дих (dih, “breath”), dialectal Macedonian дих (dih, “sigh, breath”), Serbo-Croatian dȋh (“sigh, breath”), Slovak dych (“sigh, breath”).
