Inherited from Proto-Slavic *jьzrazъ (“cut-off”), deverbative of archaic изразити (izraziti, “to frame, to mould (by cutting)”). Parallel to northern Proto-Slavic *vyrazъ (with prefix *vy- (“out of”)).
