мрестя се

Bulgarian edit

Etymology edit

Blend of Proto-Slavic *nerstiti (to spawn) and *mьrskati (to besmirch, to soil; fig. to fertilize) (whence dialectal/obsolete Bulgarian мръ́скам (mrǎ́skam)). Similar portmanteau is observed throughout South Slavic languages, e.g. Macedonian се мрести (se mresti), Serbo-Croatian мрије́стити се, hence it probably dates back to late Proto-Slavic times.

Verb edit

мре́стя се (mréstja se) first-singular present indicativeimpf (dialectal)

  1. (reflexive with се) to fertilize eggs, roe, zygote
  2. (by extension) to spawn, to produce progeny (of fish, amphibians, insects)
