Etymology edit
Indirect borrowing through Polish oficer and Russian офицер (oficer), from German Offizier, from French officier, from Old French officer, from Late Latin officiarius (“official”), from Latin officium (“office”) + -ārius (“-er”). Cognate with Belarusian афіцэр (aficer), Czech oficír, Slovak oficier, Upper Sorbian oficěr.[1]
