Inherited from Old East Slavic помьнити (pomĭniti), from Proto-Slavic *pomьněti or *pomьniti, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *minḗˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *mn-eh₁- (present stem *mn-eye-), from the root *men- (to think, mind). Cognates include Old Church Slavonic помьнѣти (pomĭněti), Polish pomnieć, Slovene pomniti.
