The origin is uncertain.[1]

J̌ahukyan separates the meaning "fierce, bold, haughty etc." from the rest, tentatively deriving it from Iranian: compare Sogdian [script needed] (ɣwrʾk(h) /ɣurāk/), ܓܘܪܝ (gwry /gurē/, proud, exalting) and the descendants of Proto-Indo-Iranian *gr̥Húš (heavy). According to him, գոռոզ (goṙoz) may be related.[2]
