editUncertain.[1] Often assumed to be an inner-Armenian formation *մառ (*maṙ) + -ա- (-a-) + *խուղ (*xuł), the first part being related to Old Armenian մայր (mayr), մառն (maṙn) and մռայլ (mṙayl), and inherited from Proto-Indo-European, and the second part being somehow related to Old Armenian խուղ (xuł, “hut, hovel”).[2][3][4][5][6][7][8] More promising is Marr's comparison with Georgian მარახული (maraxuli),[9] which has been connected with Proto-Nakh *marxo (“cloud”) (see these). We may be dealing with a word of ultimate Northeast Caucasian origin, borrowed via Old Georgian.
