Etymology edit

From Old Armenian ներքնակ (nerkʻnak), from ներքին (nerkʻin, inner, lower) +‎ -ակ (-ak). The meaning "mattress" may have developed in opposition to վերմակ (vermak, blanket), which was incorrectly assumed to contain վերին (verin, top, upper) like the antonym վերնակ (vernak) of the other senses.
