Old Armenian edit
Etymology edit
An Iranian borrowing: compare Persian جوخ (jawx, “troop”).[1][2][3] Also from Iranian: Arabic جَوْق (jawq), جَوْقَة (jawqa, “troop”), Georgian ჯოგი (ǯogi), Mingrelian ჯოგი (ǯogi), Bats ჯოგ (ǯog), Svan ჯუ̂ეგ (ǯûeg, “herd”) and possibly Old Armenian ճահուկ (čahuk). The Caucasian words may be borrowed via Armenian.[2] Ossetian Ossetian дзуг (ʒug) / дзогӕ (ʒogæ, “herd”) is borrowed from Caucasian languages.[4] Compare also Ossetian дзыгуы́р (ʒyg°ýr) / дзугур (ʒugur, “crowd, group”).
