Etymology edit
From Persian سرخ (surx, “red”) + -ա- (-a-) + Persian ماهی (mâhi, “fish”).[1] Akin to Persian [script needed] (mâhi-i surx, “a red salmon found in the Caspian and its rivers”).[2] Compare Old Armenian կարմրախայտ (karmraxayt) for another salmonid name containing the color red.

- Ասեն իմաստունքն, թէ կայ ազգ մի ձուկ, որ սուրխամահի կոչեն, որ ծնանի ի քաղցր ջուրս․ եւ յորժամ մտանէ ի ջուրս ծովուն, ոչ կարէ աճել անդ․ զի դառն է, այլ յորժամ առնու զհամ քաղցր գետոց, որ ի ծով մտանեն, ելանէ ի ծովէն եւ գայ ի ջուրս գետոյն եւ անդ բազմանայ եւ աճէ:
- Asen imastunkʻn, tʻē kay azg mi juk, or surxamahi kočʻen, or cnani i kʻaġcʻr ǰurs; ew yoržam mtanē i ǰurs covun, očʻ karē ačel and; zi daṙn ē, ayl yoržam aṙnu zham kʻaġcʻr getocʻ, or i cov mtanen, elanē i covēn ew gay i ǰurs getoyn ew and bazmanay ew ačē:
- The sages say: there is a species of fish called surxamahi; it is born in fresh water, and when it enters the waters of the sea, it cannot multiply there, as sea water is bitter. Therefore, when it tastes of the freshwater of rivers flowing into the sea, it leaves the sea, enters the waters of the river, and multiplies and breeds there.
