Yiddish [Term?], German Anchovis, via Dutch ansjovis from Spanish anchovas, anchoas, plural of anchova, anchoa (anchovy), which is from Ligurian anciôa, through Vulgar Latin *apiuva from Latin aphyē, Ancient Greek ἀφύη (aphúē, small fry).
