From Middle Persian ʾwʾz (āwāč, āwāz, “voice, sound, tune”), from 𐭥𐭠𐭰 (wāč, wāz, “word, speech”), from Proto-Iranian *wā́xš, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wā́kš, from Proto-Indo-European *wōkʷs. Cognate with Sanskrit वाच् (vā́c) and Latin vōx.
