Etymology

Inherited from Karakhanid امدی (ämdi), a derivation of Proto-Turkic *em- (“now”). Cognate with Old Anatolian Turkish امدی (imdi) and Old Turkic 𐰢𐱃𐰃 (amtï).

   • 1929, رِسَالَۀِ تُمُورْچِلِیکْ [Risālä-yi Tömürçilik, "Craft Manual of the Blacksmiths"], Yarkand:

     حَضْرَتِ جِبْرَائِیلْ عَلَیْهِ السَّلَامْ کَلِیبْ دیدِیکِه اَیْ دَاوُدْ ‌ایمْدِی‌ قَوْمِینْگ‌ْنِی اِیمَانْغَه دَعْوَتْ قِیلْمَاغِیلْ دیدِی چُونْکِه الله تَعَالَیٰ بَلَا اِیبَارُورْ

     Häzrät-i Cibrāʿīl (äläyhi s-sälām) kälib, dediki, “Äy, Dāvud! ‌Emdi‌ qäwmiñni īmānǧa däʿvät qılmaǧıl,” dedi, “çūnki Ällāh täʿālā bälā ıbarur.”

     His Holiness Gabriel (peace be upon him) came and said, “Oh, David! ‌Now‌ stop calling your people to the faith," adding, "for God will send a disaster.”

   • 1918, Häkīmzādä Niyāzī, Hämzä, تُرْکِسْتَانْ مُخْتَارِیَّتِینَه [Türkistān Muxtārīyätinä, "To the Turkestan Autonomy"], Tashkent:

     یَاشَاسُونْ ایمْدِی بِرْلَاشُوبْ اِسْلَامْ مِلَّتِی
     یَاشَاسُونْ بُو تُرْکْ اوغْلِی‌نِی مَنْگْگُو دَوْلَتِی

     Yaşasun emdi birläşüb islām milläti
     Yaşasun bu türk oğlını mäñgü däwlati

     Long live the now united nation of Islam
     Long live this eternal state of the Turks
