Etymology edit

From Middle Persian blyštn' (brištan, to roast), ultimately from a Western Iranian derivative of Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰr̥ȷ́yáti, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰr̥ǵ-yé-ti, from *bʰerǵ ~ *bʰreǵ (to roast, fry). Cognate with Sanskrit भृज्जति (bhṛjjati), Latin frigo (whence English fry) and Ancient Greek φρύγω (phrúgō).

برشتن (bereštan) (present stem بریز (beriz) or برز (berez))

  1. to toast; to roast; to fry
    • Bible Ezekiel 4:9:
      پس‌ گندم‌ و جو و باقلا و عدس‌ و ارزن‌ و ماشک برای‌ خود گرفته‌، آنها را در یک‌ ظرف‌ بریز و خوراکی‌ از آنها برای‌ خود بپز
      Thus, take with you wheat, barley, beans, lentiles, millet and vetch and, having placed them in a pot, roast them and feed yourself with that which you have cooked

Usage notes edit

The present stem is not used in Persian, but only in southern dialects such as Bandar Abbasi.
