From Classical Syriac ܒܰܪܩܽܘܩܳܐ (barqūqā), ܒܰܪܩܽܘܩܳܝܳܐ (barqūqāyā), from Byzantine Greek βερικοκκῐ́ᾱ (berikokkíā, “apricot tree”), from Ancient Greek πραικόκῐον (praikókion), from Late Latin (persica) praecocia (literally “early-ripe (peaches)”), (mālum) praecoquum (literally “early-ripe (apple)”), from Latin praecox (“early-ripe”).
