From Middle Persian 𐫟𐫡𐫏𐫗𐫏𐫅 (xrynyd), [script needed] (ZḆNN-tn' /⁠xrīdan⁠/), from Proto-Iranian *xrináHti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *krináHti, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷrinéh₂ti. Compare Sanskrit क्रीणाति (krīṇāti, to buy; to purchase), Irish crean (to purchase).
