Etymology

May be related to د و س (d-w-s) of دَاسَ (dāsa, to crush, to trample), compare سَابَ (sāba, to flow) and سَرَبَ (saraba, to leak) for derivation pattern. According to Geiger, the meaning “to interpret; to explain away”, specifically in Qurʔān 6:105 and Qurʔān 6:156, is a semantic loan from Hebrew דָּרַשׁ (dāráś).
