EtymologyEdit

From the root verb رَأَى (raʾā, to see). Originally رَأْيَة (raʾya), a feminine of رَأْي (raʾy, sight, perception), but "the Arabs prefer omitting [the hamza] ... and some say it has not been heard with ء (ʾ, hamza)." (Lane).
