From Old Turkic 𐰚𐰇𐰭𐰠 (köŋül), from Proto-Turkic *göjŋ-il (heart, mood); cognate with Azerbaijani könül, Bashkir күңел (küñel), Dolgan көӈүл, Kazakh көңіл (köñıl), Tatar күңел (küñel), Uyghur كۆڭۈل (kö'ngül) and Yakut көҥүл (köñül).
