Inherited from Proto-Turkic *yulduŕ (star); cognate with Azerbaijani ulduz, Bashkir йондоҙ (yondoź), Chuvash ҫӑлтӑр (śălt̬ăr), Kazakh жұлдыз (jūldyz), Kyrgyz жылдыз (jıldız), Tatar йолдыз (yoldız), Turkmen ýyldyz, Uyghur يۇلتۇز (yultuz) and Uzbek yulduz.
