Etymology edit

Unknown, possibly a variant of ܓܒܐ (gabbā, side, flank), of ܓܘܒܐ (gubbā, cistern), or from Akkadian 𒁺𒁍 (gub-bu /⁠gubbû; agubbû, egubbû⁠/, reservoir, cistern), ultimately from Sumerian 𒀀𒇷𒁀 (a-gub₂-ba /⁠agubbû⁠/, a basin for lustration water), Sumerian 𒇷 (gub₂, to bathe). Compare also Middle Persian [script needed] (kwp /⁠kōf⁠/, mountain, hill; hump, dome-shape).
