From the older form *ܡܲܫܟ݂ܸܚ (*mašḵiḥ), from Aramaic אַשְׁכַּח (ašəkaḥ); with a shift from /š/ to /č/ and a deletion of /x/. Compare also in Classical Syriac ܫܟܚ (šəḵaḥ, to find, to be able) and possibly related to Hebrew שָׁכַח (shakhákh, to forget).
