Learned borrowing from Classical Syriac ܣܒܠܬܐ (sebbelṯā), from Akkadian 𒄑𒄿𒇻 (/⁠simmiltum⁠/). Doublet of ܣܸܡܲܠܬܵܐ (simmaltā, ladder).
