From the root ܥ-ܩ-ܣ (ʿ-q-s), originally ܥ-ܩ-ܨ (ʿ-q-ṣ), related to being stung. Compare Arabic عَقْص (ʕaqṣ) and Hebrew עֹקֶץ (ʿṓqeṣ).
