Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘄𑘎𑘯𑘜𑘹 (ukaḷaṇe, “to flow abundantly, to burst out”), transitive from Sanskrit उत्कालयति (utkālayati, “drives out”). Compare Gujarati ઊકળવું (ūkaḷvũ), Hindi उकलना (ukalnā).
