Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘐𑘰𑘽𑘘𑘲 (gāṃṭī), 𑘐𑘰𑘙𑘲 (gāṭhī), 𑘐𑘰𑘽𑘙𑘲 (gāṃṭhī), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀕𑀁𑀞𑀺 (gaṃṭhi), from Sanskrit ग्रन्थि (granthí). Cognate with Gujarati ગાંઠ (gā̃ṭh), Hindi गाँठ (gā̃ṭh), Assamese গাঁঠি (gãthi), Sinhalese ගැටය (gæṭaya).
