Etymology edit

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *HnaHtʰás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *HnaHtʰás, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃neh₂- (to help, support), with semantic influence from the etymologically unrelated root नाध् (nādh, to seek help). Cognate with Ancient Greek ὀνί̆νημῐ (onínēmi, to help; to please). The Sanskrit root is नाथ् (nāth, to seek aid, ask).
