Etymology edit
Of uncertain origin. Often linked to पल्य (palya, “a sack for corn”) and पल्ली (pallī, “a measure of grain”), the latter itself linked to पल (pala, “a measure of weight”). Other theories derive the word from पात्र (pātra, “a drinking vessel”), via the sound changes पात्र (pātra) > *पट्ट (paṭṭa) > *पळ्ळ (paḷḷa) > पल्ल (palla). Connections to पालवी (pālavī, “a kind of vessel”) have also been proposed.
