Etymology edit

Of uncertain origin. Often linked to पल्य (palya, a sack for corn) and पल्ली (pallī, a measure of grain), the latter itself linked to पल (pala, a measure of weight). Other theories derive the word from पात्र (pātra, a drinking vessel), via the sound changes पात्र (pātra) > *पट्ट (paṭṭa) > *पळ्ळ (paḷḷa) > पल्ल (palla). Connections to पालवी (pālavī, a kind of vessel) have also been proposed.
